A number of terms that may be unfamiliar in this case study are described here.

Alley farming: an agricultural practice in areas of land guarded by trees or bushes. It involves the cultivation of food crops between hedgerows of multipurpose trees, especially legumes.

Field of view: the view seen through an eyepiece of a microscope.

Hedge row: trees or shrubs grown closely to form a continuous row.

Germinability: the potential of a seed to produce shoots and roots when the conditions for germination are fulfilled.

Hybridisation: the development of an offspring from plants when opposite sexes of different genotypes mate. This involves cross-pollination or cross-fertilisation.

Viability: the capacity of seeds or pollen grains to germinate.
